The number of hotels and restaurants registered at the Trade Register in the first quarter of the year dropped by 3.2%, nationally, compared to the previous year, according to the data provided by the National Trade Register Office, ONRC. Thus, approximately 1,440 companies operating in “Hotels and restaurants” sector registered at the Trade Register in the first quarter of the year. The highest number of new units registered in the first three months is in Bucharest – 176, increasing by 16% compared to the similar period last year, Constanta – 80, increasing by 17%, Maramures – 59, 20% more than compared to Q1 2008, Brasov-52 and Timis county – 51. Counties with the lowest number of new units registered for this segment are Braila and Vrancea – 14 units, Giurgiu – 10 and Ialomita – 7. Most of the new units registered in Q1 are bars and other beverage activities, 571, 9% higher than compared to the same period in 2008. 75 of the registered units were hotels and other accommodation facilities, declining approximately 24% compared to the similar period last year, while the number of new units on restaurants sector dropped approximately 6%, down to 433 units. The rest of the registered units in the first quarter of the year represent other accommodation services, such as trailers or campsites, 301 units and other food and beverage activities such as catering, 60 units. According to the ONRC data, the number of economic agents operating on March 31 2009 on the hotel and restaurants market was 47,347, dropping 3.5% compared to the end of 2008. Economic agents account for 66% in urban areas and 34% in rural areas with 32,076 units and 15,271, respectively.
