Flavius Boncea, spokesman of Timisoara city hall, stated that Timisoara city will submit the application to become European capital of culture in 2021.
The European Capital of Culture program was initiated by the Council of Ministers for Culture in the European Union in 1985, in order to bring together the European nations and celebrate the cities contribution to culture development. 40 cities have already owned this title.
In 2009, Vilnius and Linz were European cultural capital, in 2008, Liverpool and Stavanger, while in 2007, Sibiu and Luxemburg.
In 2010, Essen in Ruhr region, Germany, Pecs in Hungary and the capital of Turkey, Istanbul, are cultural capitals.
In 2011, the title will go to Turku city in Finland and Tallin, the capital of Estonia. In 2012, Guimaraes in Portugal and Maribor in Slovenia will be the capitals, in 2013 Marsilia and Kosice, while in 2014, Riga together with Umea, a small locality, university center, located in northern Sweeden will become the most Nordic European locality wining the title.
