In 2008, the main five travel agencies on the Romanian market, Happy Tour, Paralela 45, Eximtur, Aerotravel and Marshal Turism registered total sales of approximately EUR 207 mil., 14% higher than in 2007. Airplane tickets selling generated half of the revenues.
According to the analysis performed by Ziarul Financiar, the five agencies register approximately 25% of the total revenues generated annually by the 2,500 travel agencies in Romania.
According to the data provided by ANAT, The National Association of Travel Agencies and the market players, the travel agencies market is valued at EUR 700-800 mil., including activities such as incoming, outgoing, ticketing, domestic tourism, conferences or business events.
Happy Tour is leading with a EUR 50-51 mil. turnover in 2008, 10% higher than in 2007, but below the initial estimates, EUR 5 mil. higher. Gabriel Ionescu, manager of Happy Tour forecasts a 5% increase of businesses in 2009.
Paralela 45, owned by Alin Burcea businessman, ranks 2nd and foresees a drop ranging between 9 and 13% for the current year. The company registered a turnover of EUR 48 mil. from tourism activities.
Eximtur travel agency, controlled by Morariu family, registered a turnover of EUR 40.5 mil. in 2008, 15% higher than in 2007. For this year, the company foresees a sales increase of 10%.
For 2009, Aerotravel Lufthansa City reached a turnover of EUR 35 mil. in 2008 and expects the businesses will stagnate, following the past 4 years of over 20% growth.
Marshal Turism, controlled by Marius Daniel Antonescu, estimates an increasing turnover by 30% for 2008, compared to the last year when the company registered a turnover of EUR 23.9 mil.
