On May 25, the Ministry of Regional Development and Tourism announced through a press release that the European Union Strategy for Danube Region, a model of regional development at European level, initiative launched by Romania and Austria in 2008, will be completed by the end of the current year.
From an economic point of view, implementing the strategy will result in creating new opportunities in Romania for the business environment by improving accessibility, continuing expanding and modernizing the infrastructure at harbors, airports, road and rail, by creating a multi-modal transport system, developing and expanding utilities infrastructure.
Danube Strategy is an internal strategy of the European Union where third parties, river by countries are invited to participate and respect the three principles of the EU Strategy for Baltic Sea Region, namely connectivity, environment protection and water administration, socio-economic development.
Elena Udrea ministry stated that the project envisaging the transformation of Bucharest into a Danube capital should be resumed due to its importance for Romanian economy. Discussions about turning the capital into a Danube port dates back before 1990.
