From January to December 2008, Tarom airline transported over 1.77 mil. passengers, 5% more than in 2007, ranking 9th in a top of companies in Europe, considering the growth rate criteria. The average occupancy rate was 61.8%, dropping 5.4% compared to 2007.
According to the Association of European Airlines (AEA), Tarom registered a 14.5% drop of the number of transported passengers in December 2008.
This year, the company plans an image change and foresees a 8% increase of the number of passengers, stated the interim general manager, Ruxandra Brutaru.
Brutaru stated that, in order to regain the market share, the company will launch products envisaging a various public, with tariffs of EUR 50 taxes not included, towards all destinations.
Tarom aims to attract low-cost passengers by selling 20% of the total capacity at competitive tariffs and estimates the occupancy rate will increase by approximately 6% compared to 2008.
Moreover, Tarom will introduce new external flights from Bucharest towards Lyon and Amsterdam and from Cluj towards Paris, starting May-June stated Ruxandra Brutaru.
In the country, the operator will launch flights from Bucharest and Cluj towards Constanta to cover transport to seaside resorts.
