Slower investment pace makes Romanian mountain resorts unattractive

Add comment

In 2007, over 200,000 Romanian tourists spent their vacations in mountain resorts in Austria, half of them choosing winter season. For this year, it is estimated that the number of tourist packages sold for Austria will increase by at least 30%.

Lucian Boronea, General Manager of Accent Travel & Events, considers that Romania as ski destination is a country with great potential.

Lack of investments in ski slopes and thus, the poor ski infrastructure, few accommodation facilities and the inexistence of other leisure facilities such as spa centers or pools are some of the problems met in mountain resorts in Romania.

EUR 71 mil. were invested in Salzburg region in Austria for winter season 2008-2009 for cable installations, ensuring snow  and offers provided in Salzburg. Approximately 80% of the ski slopes can be covered with artificial snow if necessary, stated Gerhard Leskovar, Marketing Manager on Central and Eastern Europe, Asia and Middle East of Salzburg State Board of Tourism. Salzburg attracted 21,000 Romanian tourists in the past winter season.

Traian Badulescu, Spokesman of the National Association of Travel Agencies (ANAT), considers that accommodation limit in mountain areas in Romania influences on price appreciation in certain periods of the year, demand often exceeding the supply in these periods.
