Retezat Natural Reservation could be one of the 7 natural wonders of the world

Retezat natural reservation could be selected as one of the 7 natural wonders of the world in 2011, after being included on the nominees list as a result of Romsilva National Forest Direction efforts.

Everest mountain, Amazon river, Niagara waterfall, Galapagos Islands, Belogradchik rocks (Bulgaria), Al-Hasa oasis (Saudi Arabia) are other nominees together with Retezat National Park.

New Seven Wonders Swiss foundation will select the 7 wonders out of 261 international nominees. The nominalizations were divided in 7 categories, corresponding to regions and specific relief forms: glacier landscapes; islands; mountain and volcanoes; caves, rocks and valleys; forests, national parks and reservations; lakes, rivers and waterfalls; marine landscapes. 

77 proposals of the 261 nominees will be chosen until July 7 by online voting on new7wonders.co site, 11 for each category. Later, on July 21, only 21 proposals will be chosen, 3 of each group.  These will be the finalists of which the 7 wonders will be chosen by voting also. The 7 natural wonders will be announced in 2011.

Retezat National Park, biosphere reservation, set up in 1935, lies on an area of over 380 sq km in Hunedoara county. It is a natural area of national and international interest with 1,200 species of plants, 185 bird species, wild animals, the largest glacial lake in Romania, Bucura Lake, the deepest glacial lake in the country, Zanaoga Lake and over 20 mountain peeks higher than 2,000 meters.
