Over 34,000 bars and restaurants in Romania

According to the National Trade Register in Romania, 21,333 bars and 12,900 restaurants were operational at the beginning of 2009. The market is valued at EUR 2.5 bn., 12% higher than compared to the same period last year.

The capital remains the market leader with a share of 10.4%, over 1,000 bars and approximately 2,450 restaurants. In the top of counties with the highest number of units, Constanta occupies the next position, with 2,000 units, followed by Timis with 1,500 bars and restaurants, Cluj with 800 bars and 500 restaurants and Iasi with approximately 1,300 units. Together with Bucharest, the counties mentioned above, account for 30% of the total number of bars and restaurants in Romania.

Ialomita and Covasna counties occupy the last positions with over 300 units each, so as Giurgiu, with only 230 restaurants and cafés.

Bucharest, together with Ilfov and Constanta counties are the only regions were restaurants prevail. In the rest of the country the number of bars exceeds that of restaurants.
