Global crisis hasn’t impacted only the accommodation segment of luxury hotels, but also MICE segment, which generated approximately EUR 50 mil. for hotels in 2008.
The turnover of top 5 star hotels in the capital, JW Marriott Bucharest Grand Hotel, Radisson Blu, InterContinental, Athenee Palace Hilton, Crowne Plaza and Howard Johnson Grand Plaza, exceeded EUR 100 mil. last year. According to the latest reports, approximately half of the hotels’ revenues have been generated by MICE segment.
Unlike last year, revenues on food&beverage segment declined by 12 to 15%, stated Dina Litzica, Public Relations and Marketing Manager of JW Marriott Bucharest Grand Hotel, which registers 50% of revenues from MICE. The unit has 12 halls for events, cumulating 1,700 seats for conferences events.
As a result of the economic conditions encountered this year and of the nine months out of service period for the 21st floor, InterContinental reported lower revenues by 10% on food&beverage segment. Dana Chiriac, Marketing & PR Manager of InterContinental stated that the segment accounts for 35% of the total revenues.
Clients interested in organizing event in the hotel have preferred to renounce to an overnight stay this year and still hold the events, as budgets declined, specified Chiriac.
Adrian Adam, Sales and Marketing Manager of Radisson Blu, stated that events and food&beverage segment generates approximately 45% of the unit’s revenues. The hotel has 11 conference halls up to 90 seats each and one events hall, fitting up to 500 seats in theatre style or 300 seats for festive dinners. Also, the hotel has 7 bars and restaurants.
Approximately 190 hotel projects are currently developed in Romania, out of which half are under construction. Most of them require investments between EUR 714,000 and EUR 952,000, according to IBC Focus monitoring company of constructions market. The other half of the projects is represented by investments in project stages, respectively 49%. The remainder of 1% are in preliminary stages.
According to IBC Focus, there are 14 investment projects in Bucharest in accommodation units.
At national level, over 830 investments have been announced on leisure segment, respectively pools, gym halls etc. accounting for 62% of the total investments, relaxation centers and spa, restaurants, cafes, exhibitions spaces and conferences – 7.8%, museums and theatres – 7%.
