Sonia Nastase, General Manager of Howard Johnson Grand Plaza Hotel in the capital, 5 star classified, considers that the first six months in 2010 will be tougher, but also that, in the second part of the year, especially starting with September, the local market will recover.
Howard Johnson Grand Plaza Hotel reported a slow recovery in September, when the occupancy was of 60%, 10% higher compared to the previous months.
For the current year, the unit forecasts EUR 9 mil. turnover, declining by 31% compared to 2008. For 2010, Sonia Nastase aims to register a turnover close to the result of EUR 13 mil. in 2008.
In the first nine months of this year, Howard Johnson Grand Plaza Hotel reported EUR 6 mil. turnover and 20% operational profit. Tariffs dropped over 30% in this period but in September they started to increase towards the real value of the period, stated Sonia Nastase.
Moreover, Nastase does not expect room rates to reach previous years tariffs, when a room rate went up to EUR 400 in Bucharest. As a result of 30% decline in the demand, the hotel introduced promotions and gratuities for clients in the first nine months of the year.
At present, the unit has 250 employees, compared to 270 employees at the beginning of the year. Sonia Nastase stated that there are no job offers currently and also that the employees will benefit of new training programs starting 2010.
