In the first three months of 2009, Golden Tulip hotel chain registered a drop by 9-11% of the occupancy rate due to the economic crisis. Still, the expanding plans in Romania will match a double accommodation capacity in the next 10 years, stated Paul Marasoiu, regional manager for Romania, Moldova and Bulgaria of Golden Tulip Hotels, Inns & Resorts. The occupancy rate registered a severe decrease starting April, down to 18-20%, caused by the two Easter holidays, Catholic and Orthodox. Marasoiu stated that investments in hotel industry will have a strong comeback in 2011, as the existing capacity in Romania needs at least doubling within 10 years. For 2010-2012, there are several projects under evaluation for developing Golden Tulip in Timisoara, Arad, Satu Mare, Bistrita, Sucevita, Tulcea, Brasov. Currently in Romania, six Golden Tulip units are operating. The representative of Golden Tulip stated that other three units will be included in the company’s portfolio this year. Golden Tulip Ana Dome in Cluj with a capacity of 109 rooms will open by the end of May, following an investment of approximately EUR 11 mil. Golden Tulip North Palladium Bucharest with 144 rooms required a EUR 16 mil. investment. The hotel will open in December current year according to the estimates. Tulip Inn-Moeciu will comprise 91 rooms and will open in July. The necessary investment reaches approximately EUR 10 mil. Moreover, by the end of 2009, the 5 star hotel Royal Tulip Lighthouse Golf Course will open in Balcic, Bulgaria with an accommodation capacity of 220 rooms. On the local market, the company envisages to develop a 5 star unit within 3 years.
