Elena Udrea, the Minister of Regional Development and Tourism, stated on June 9 in Mamaia resort, that the Ministry could take over the project to develop the Danube - Bucharest Channel, to be included in the European Union Strategy for Danube Region. Danube - Bucharest Channel will connect Bucharest and the Pan-European transport channel no. 7 through a waterway with a transport capacity of up to 20 million tones per year.
Udrea stated that developing the channel will also impact the economy, so that 30,000 ha of agriculture land and 11 localities will no longer be affected by floods, providing the necessary water to irrigate 150,000 ha of land and to supply the bordering localities. Moreover, facilities for fishing will be developed, while tourism and leisure will be also be provided in the area.
At the same time, Elena Udrea stated that one of the Romanian projects to be included within the European strategy for Danube Delta could be the promotion of Romanian tourism destinations along the river and cultural, historical and religious tours in Oltenia region.
Moreover, the minister stated that Danube Delta is not adequately exploited by tourism either, but that she envisages to promote tourism considering the sustainable development of the region.
