Atlantic Restaurant Systems, the company operating the Burger King franchise in Romania, announced the outrun of its development plan, which initially comprised five new units to be opened in Romania during April 2008 - April 2009. Burger King chain will count eight restaurants in Romania before March 2009. Burger King entered the Romanian market in April 2008 in Bucharest, when it opened its first location within Baneasa Shopping Center and followed its development in Bucharest, with City Mall, Cora Lujerului, Cora Pantelimon and Liberty Center. A new Burger King unit will be opened in Bucharest, within Plaza Romania, after the mall's management announced the expansion of the commercial area by 6,000 sq m. Remus Tiuca, General Manager of Burger King Romania, stated that the first unit outside Bucharest will be opened within the commercial area of Carrefour Constanta. The following unit will be opened in Bucharest Mall. The two units investment will total approximately EUR 1 mil. Remus Tiuca said that Burger King foresees the development of a 50 units chain in Romania, within 5 years. Currently, Burger King's competitors are McDonald's, with 58 units and KFC, with 32 units. Romanian restaurant market comprises over 12,000 restaurants and EUR 2 bn. turnover.
