Blue Air and Wizz Air to generate over EUR 50 mil. together from luggage tax in 2010

Blue Air and Wizz Air low-cost companies could post this year over EUR 20 mil. each from luggage tax, according to the computing of Ziarul Financiar newspaper, which included the number of passengers estimated by the two operators and the fee for hold luggage.

Blue Air and Wizz Air own together a market share of approximately 40% of the total airline market in Romania, estimated at 9 mil. passengers.

Blue Air company charges every hold luggage, weighing 32 kg, with EUR 10 if the tax is paid at ticket’s booking or EUR 20 if paid at airport.

According to Ziarul Financiar, including 2.2 mil. passengers estimated by Blue Air to be transported this year and the EUR 10 tax per hold luggage, the company could register EUR 22 mil. from luggage tax, accounting for 11% of the forecasted revenues, if each passengers travels with a hold luggage.

Wizz Air, the Hungarian operator could report EUR 30 mil. revenues from the luggage tax, considering 2.1 mil. passengers estimated by the company this year and a minimum of hold luggage for each passengers.

The luggage tax at Wizz Air is EUR 15 if payment is made at booking ticket and EUR 30 if paid at airport.

Previously, Natasha Kazmer, Communication Manager of Wizz Air, stated a quarter of the airline operator revenues are generated by the tax on additional services.
