Malin Malineanu, Development Coordinator for Romania of Best Western, stated that three times more 3 and 4 star hotels demanded affiliation to Best Western Hotels Romania network from the beginning of the year, the number reaching 11 submissions in April, compared to 2008, when it registered 3-5 applications each month. Affiliation to an international hotel chain generates higher visibility and can increase the number of customers in several hotels. Therefore, this measure is one of the main elements of the strategy to face crisis for small units, classified 3 and 4 stars. At present, Best Western Hotels Romania has affiliated 12 hotels. By the end of the year two more hotels will be affiliated in Moldova region. The turnover of the hotel chain stagnates compared to 2008, when it registered EUR 12 mil. turnover. Stagnation is result of the 10% drop of the occupancy rate registered by hotels of the chain. Although Bucharest registered an increase of occupancy rate by approximately 3-5%, outside Bucharest, especially in Cluj and Timisoara it dropped by 10-12% from the beginning of the year, compared to 2008. Best Western Hotels strategy is to continue the development process by at least one affiliated hotel per year. The hotel chain owns over 4,000 hotels internationally, in approximately 100 countries.
