Athenee Palace Hilton in Bucharest, 5 star classified, succeeded to save the highest quantity of energy in 2009, outrunning the other Hilton hotels from Central and Eastern Europe plus Turkey. The members of the hotel team were rewarded with a bicycle each, for their effort to protect the environment.
The competition “Win a Bike” is part of the program “Hilton Sustenability Challenge”, initiated by the hotel to cut water and power consumption. The ecologic trend approached by Hilton Worldwide was adopted by more than 180 hotels in Europe.
For the last 4 years, Hilton Worldwide managed to reduce carbon dioxide emissions with 110,000 tones, the equivalent of 33,000 cars driven for one year, while water consumption was reduced with a quantity equal to filling 320 Olympic pools.
The Hilton project’s objectives of sustenability until 2014 envisage reducing by 20% the carbon dioxide emissions, the consumption of energy and waste volume and reducing the water consumption by 10%. The means to achieve the established objectives are using fluorescent light bulbs, reducing the consumption of computers and printers, recycling activities and reducing the flow of water from toilets.
