The number of arrivals and overnight stays in accommodation establishments in Romania declined 16% and 18%, respectively, compared to the same period in 2008. The number of foreign tourists dropped from 90,400 in November 2008 down to 89,800 in November 2009.
Romanian tourists accounted for 78.5% of the total arrivals.
84.1% of the overnight stays were made by Romanian tourists, while foreign tourists represented 15.9%, more precisely 184,500.
Hotels and guest houses were the most demanded accommodation facilities, reaching 30.9% occupancy and 25.3%, respectively. According to the data of the National Institute of Statistics, INS, the number of foreign tourist arrivals declined from 1.4 mil. between January and November in 2008 to 1.2 mil. in the same period of 2009.
Overnight stays dropped from 19.7 mil. in the first eleven months of 2008 to 1.64 mil. from January to November 2009.
Hotels occupancy was close to 35% in the first 11 months of 2009.
Arrivals registered at border crossing points from January to November 2009 were slightly over 7 mil., declining by 15.1% compared to the same period in 2008.
Departures reported at border crossing points dropped 10.2% down to approximately 11 mil.
