Ana Hotels group, owned by George Copos businessman, reported EUR 26 mil. turnover in 2009, decreasing by 26% compared to the previous year, but managed to obtain profit, although most hotels operated by the group reported lower occupancy than in 2008 and cut rates. At the beginning of the year, the company forecasted declining sales by 30%.
Copos stated that the profit will be mainly destined for investments planed for the current year in the assets of Ana Hotels, such as upgrading the 5 star units in Bucharest and those in Poiana Brasov resort.
In order to maintain the investment projects, the business man contracted an EUR 25 mil. loan from BRD Societe Generale. Regarding the hospitality industry, Copos businessman considers that the market evolution was not favorable and more and more hotels located at the mountains or at the seaside will face bankruptcy, as a result of the present economic situation: significant decrease in the number of conferences, trainings, teambuilding.
He also added that business tourism declined by approximately 50% compared to the last year.
