The quality of beaches at Romanian seaside registered the most outstanding improvement in the European Union in 2008, when 98% of the beaches met international standards, while in 2007 20% of them failed to meet the criteria. In the European Union 88.6% of the beaches met the drastic criteria in 2008, increasing by 2.5% compared to 2007. According to a report carried out by Marine Conservation Society, all beaches in Holand have met the minimum standards for the forth year consecutively, while Greece and Cyprus have improved. Cyprus ranked 1st registering the highest share of bathing waters meeting EU standards, 98.2%. Greece occupied the second position with 97.7%, followed by France with 96.3%. In Great Britain, the quality of beaches decreased significantly. The number of beaches failing to meet international criteria reaching 50%, while Poland and Belgium ranked after Great Britain.
