60% of Romanians over 15 years old don’t plan a holiday in 2009

According to a study of GFK Romania, approximately 60% of Romanians over 15 years old don’t plan to leave on vacation in 2009, maintaining their last years’ habits.

People not leaving on holidays are mainly over 55 years old, from Moldova and Oltenia regions, living in rural area, having elementary school and incomes per family lower than 240 EUR.

Considering holiday destinations, seaside resorts are the most attractive. 39% of those leaving on holidays this year chose a seaside resort. Mountain resorts are chosen by 22% of those leaving on vacation, especially by those living in Dobrogea and Bucharest.

13% of Romanians haven’t decided where to spend their vacation yet, while 20% of those benefiting of holiday know for sure they will stay at home, as they can’t afford otherwise.

Similarly to 2008, Romanians choosing to spend their holidays abroad, travel to destinations such us Turkey, Italy, Greece and Spain.

The main mean of transport to reach destination is own car or friends’ car. Train and buses are less considered as means of transport, only 20% of those planning to leave on vacation using them, while 9% choose to travel by plane. 17% haven’t decided on the mean of transport.

GfK Omnibus provided the above information. GfK Omnibus is a study carried out monthly by GfK Romania research company. The information is representative for Romania’s population ages over 15 years old.

The sample is formed of 1,095 persons from urban and rural areas. Data was collected between June 2 and 20, 2009.
