The turnover of companies operating on F&B segment in Romania declined 26% last year, compared to 2008, according to a study of Trend Hospitality.
According to the study, the cumulated turnover of units operating nationally on F&B segment was of EUR 2.04 bn. in 2007, increasing by 11% compared to 2006, while in 2008 it decreased by 15% compared to 2007, down to EUR 1.48 bn.
In 2009, there were 34,233 units operating on F&B segment in Romania, out of which 38% restaurants, 25% bars and clubs, 17% catering companies. Also, there were 1,712 fast-food units 5,135 cafes in the country. Most of the F&B facilities in Romania, namely 36%, lie on an area between 100 and 200 sq m, followed by the locations with areas between 250 and 500 sq m. 19% of the units cover less than 100 sq m, 11% have between 500 and 1,000 sq m, while 10% have over 1,000 sq m.
By capacity criteria, most units in the country, respectively 36%, have between 100 and 250 seats, 29% have between 50 and 100 seats, 11% have from 250 to 500 seats, while 5% have a capacity over 500 seats.
72% of the companies owning bars, restaurants and cafes operate in a sole location, 9% own more than 3 locations, while 6.4% operate under franchise system.
According to the study, 38% of the units are restaurants, bars and cafes located near hotels or inside hotels, 12% are located near or inside commercial centers or malls, 13% in city centers and 3% in business centers.
32% of the domestic restaurants serve Romanian cuisine, 28% are Italian cuisine units, 9% are fast foods and 7% serve international cuisine.
56% of the customers spend on average between EUR 5 and 15 in a restaurant, 20% pay a bill higher than EUR 5, 15% pay between EUR 15 and 30 and only 9% pay more than EUR 30 per person.
