2,400 ha of beach at the Black Sea Romanian seaside, lost in the past 35 years

Add comment

Laszlo Borbely, the Minister of Environment and Forestry, stated that there are studies showing that 2,400 ha of beach disappeared within the past 35 years and that, unless measures are undertaken rapidly, in 22 years Romania will have a very small coastal zone left.

Borbely specified that an order has been signed by the end of April related to financial support for the preparation of the investment project “Reducing Coastal Erosion” within Axis 5, intervention domain 2.

The coastal zone of Romania extends over 244 km. Romanian Waters National Administration within the Environment Ministry administrates the coastline.

According to a study carried out in 2004 by Dobrogea - Seaside Water Branch, the shrink of cliffs was estimated at approximately 0.5 m per year, a discontinuous process, while the seaside areas presented significant shortage of annual layers, leading to continuous erosion.

The specialists consider that the current phenomenon is the result of lower load deposited in the Black Sea due to water facilities set up in the Danube river basin, along the river and in the delta, as well as the deviation of deposits transported along the shore, due to drifts modifications caused by marina and coastline constructions.
